Are you willing to give

Sometime in 2004 I decided after seeing a blood donor commercial that I wanted to be a 10 gallon donor by the time my 40th birthday came.  That means 6 donations a year one donation every 8 weeks or 56 days with a little bit of room in case I didn't make it in to donate until week 9.

In 2007 I decided that I would finally get a tattoo.  You would think that I would be worried about the pain of the tattoo, the judgments that might come along with it, the who knows what yuck nastiness would come with it, but no my only concern was that I would be on the deferral list to donate blood for one year.

In 2008 I had relocated so I had to find a new center to donate that meant a new donor record too.

Well today was donation 6 of 2009 and on record it will show as my 24th donation thats 3 gallons only 7 more gallons to go and the needle poke doesn't even bother me its the using my keyboard to type and the annoying little sensation I get in my finger that was pricked to test my iron levels.

The incredible part about it all is recently someone I have come to spend a great deal of time working with this year required a blood transfusion.  Once again there are no coincidences the blood needed just happened to be my type.  Now did she receive my blood probably not, but she might have and that there is just the little extra that gives you the warm fuzzy and makes you say you know its all so worth it.

I encourage each person that can to go donate just one little pint of blood even if you only do it once a year it makes a difference.

Taking the red badge of courage pic in the barn doorway now that was funny.
